Re: Coasteering validation.

Coasteering originates back to the beginning of the 19th century, and has historically been used as an alternative description for sea-level traversing or rock hopping. (ref Devon Rock Climbs first edition 1957).

There is no national award specific to coasteering.  However, the Adventure Activity Licensing Service (AALS) license this activity and they recognize the MIC as the technical expert in this area.  However, there is dispute that the training and assessment or necessary experience required is not completely relevant for coasteering and do not fully cover water and its inherent risk.  They can also debate that most of the canoe coaching awards do not cover the different rope work techniques that may need to be employed at such venues. However with the combination of both awards I will be able to cover the syllabus.

I must state that good group skills, motivation and control (leadership) will be required.  I would also suggest that any leaders that attend would be made aware of the risks and responsibilities that come with the rewards.

We have put together a dynamic programme, which will be covered on a full days training. A further period of development and completing action plans is then decided with your tutor.  When this is completed and the candidates feel ready, they will be assessed, at the venue of their choice and with their group.  Like all modern assessments, it will be run on a non -interventionist basis, feedback will be given at the very end and a written report with the relevant certificate will then be issued.

With all this in mind, coasteering provides an excellent medium for education. (Changing attitudes)

“There is no improvement without change.”

It is possible to meet many skills and different educational aims when coasteering  including and this list is by no way comprehensive:

Physically demanding

All round use of the body

Refreshing and invigorating

Mentally demanding if used with problem solving

Planning required

Concentration

Communication

Listening skills

Evaluating performance

Team work and individual achievement

Trust in self and others

Self confidence / belonging

If you require any further information then please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely
