Answer questions on separate pages, keeping your answers brief where possible.

Consult literature where necessary.  You are to assume summer conditions unless stated and within the UK at all times.  Papers should be returned to WLA office once completed.  (Latest two weeks before the course starting) WLA office can accept any format disk

Navigation 

1.            List as many navigational aids. (Means of finding out where you are) as you can recall. 

2.    Explain how you would execute an aspect of a slope.

5.            Describe a procedure that you may use to relocate your position if you were lost at a position near Tryfan summit, in thick mist.

Access and conservation 

1.            State how you would go about finding out access to an unfamiliar area. 

2.            Why would it be dangerous to use certain lands to walk over at certain times of year. 

3.            Name three areas where footpath erosion is a problem or has been. 

4.            What is a S.S.S.I? 

5.            Briefly describe why we need to be involved with access and conservation.

Hazards 

1.            List four major causes of Hypothermia. 

2.            Is rapid re-warming the best treatment for mountain hypothermia.

3.            If the Air temperature is plus 5C and the wind speed is 20 kph, what would the apparent affect cooling in C be on the exposed flesh and what is this called.

4.            You decided to use a top rope for one of your party in an emergency. Explain how you would set up such a system, outlining what knots you would use where. List 3 things to beware of when setting up your system.  Use diagrams where necessary. 

5.            You are the leader of a group of eight young adults (15 - 16) mixed boys and girls a male parent has come along to be your assistant.  You decide to make use of the settled summer weather and cross the Carneddau. Briefly describe what you would do if your assistant (the only other adult in the group) had an heart attack, roughly three miles from a road.
